Lesser Known Historical Events

History is often written by the victors or covered up by authorities who believe they are protecting the general public from some of the incidents they had to do for public protection. Listed below are some historical events that actually occurred that you won’t read about in your history books.

Operation Northwoods
US planned to stage fake attacks on US just so they’d have an excuse to overthrow Castro in Cuba. In the early 1960s, American military leaders drafted plans to create public support for a war against Cuba and oust Fidel Castro from power. The plans included committing acts of terrorism in U.S. cities, killing innocent people and U.S. soldiers, blowing up a U.S. ship, assassinating Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees and hijacking planes. The plans were all approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but were rejected by JFK.

Operation Snow White
The Church of Scientology managed to perform the largest infiltration of the United States government in history. Ever. 5,000 of Scientology’s crack commandos wiretapped and burglarized various agencies. They stole hundreds of documents, mainly from the IRS. No critic was spared, and in the end, 136 organizations, agencies and foreign embassies were infiltrated.

Project Echelon
NATO, Australia, and New Zealand all agreed to spy on each other and share the information, that way they wouldn’t be violating any domestic laws about spying on citizens. They carried out the project, code named program ECHELON in the 60s. This was all widely disclosed between 1988-2001, but people act like Snowden was the first time we found out the government was listening. No one was ostracized or called crazy for saying this, the truth is that hardly anyone cared at the time, then 9/11 happened and even less people cared what the government did

Project MKULtra
Project MKUltra involved a lot of human experimentation, and one of its most notable subjects was Frank Olson. Olson was a CIA employee who was dosed with LSD by his supervisor and then “committed suicide” nine days later by jumping out of his hotel window. After an autopsy, there was some evidence found that he was unconscious when he plunged out the window. Some speculate that the CIA murdered Olson. I read an interesting take on MKUltra and its goals. The organizers rationalized it as a way to incapacitate the people of the USSR without the use of nuclear weapons. If they were able to get LSD into the water supply or other method, millions of people could be temporarily unable to take up arms and therefore prevent mass casualties if war broke out.

Operation Gladio
It was a multi-national military plan to arm and train clandestine groups in many (perhaps all) of its member countries and elsewhere in Europe. The official narrative on these networks is confused, contradictory and definitely incomplete, with many basic questions unanswered. The stated reasons for establishing undercover armed groups has tended to focus on use of the secret armies as a fifth column to provide armed resistance in the case of a Soviet invasion.

Operation Ajax
Operation Ajax, in short, was when the CIA overthrew Muhammad Mossadeq’s democratic government in 1953 and reinstalled the Shah to the throne of Iran. In 1951, a British company (AIOC) had control of Iran’s oil fields. The Iranian people believed that their deal with the AIOC was unfairly benefitting the company and a political controversy ensued. A man named Muhammad Mossadeq, a member of Iranian parliament, demanded a renegotiation of the standing agreement and the Iranian people were quick to rally behind him and make him their honored leader. The previously ineffective parliament then became the primary government in the area, leaving the Shah, who had ruled as an authoritarian monarch powerless. Since Mossadeq was backed by the majority of the people in Iran, it appeared to be Iran’s first democratically elected leader. However, the new government only meant trouble for the United States. In 1953, there was a boycott of Iranian oil, their oil revenues decreased, and the economy declined. There were also several problems stemming from Mossadeq’s rule. He was the “driving force behind an Iranian attempt to nationalize” Britain’s oil company, the AIOC. Also, having been extremely independent, he refused to work with the requests of the United States and many became afraid that he would join forces with America’s enemy, the Soviet Union. As a result, the CIA staged a coup d’etat in Iran, headed by President Theodore Roosevelt’s grandson, Kermit Roosevelt. The purpose was to return the Shah to power through CIA engineered protests and bribery of Iranian officers. The first phase was unsuccessful and the Shah fled Tehran, fearful that his life was in danger for his participation in the attempted overthrow of Massadeq. The second phase was more successful, and enabled the Shah to victoriously return to Iran where he then had a 25-year dictatorship supported by the United States. However, this ruling also came with the Savak, a brutal and terrifying police force that angered many Iranians and ignited hatred towards the Americans. Although the people of Iran suspected CIA involvement, the U.S. government kept the coup d’etat a secret from the American people. Operation Ajax was considered a resounding success until 1979, when the Iranians revolted against the U.S. Embassy in what became known as the Iranian Hostage Crisis.

The FBI for years were hard-bent on taking down the civil rights movement. COINTELPRO (an acronym for Counter Intelligence Program) was a series of covert, and often illegal, projects conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) aimed at investigating and disrupting dissident political organizations within the United States. They framed, blackmailed and even killed various leaders. FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt was convicted of violating people’s civil rights, the highest law enforcement official ever held criminally responsible for ignoring the Constitution. And then Reagan pardoned him.

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident
On August 2, 1964, the U.S. destroyer Maddox exchanged shots with North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. Two days later, the Maddox and another destroyer reported once again coming under fire. Although most historians, including those employed by the U.S. military, have since concluded that the second of those attacks never actually occurred, it served as the pretext for an immediate ramp-up of the Vietnam War. By the end of the day, President Lyndon B. Johnson had ordered retaliatory air strikes, and by late 1965 some 180,000 American troops were on the ground, with more on the way.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Warnings
Shortly before the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, the United Stated showered the Japanese cities of Nagasaki, Hiroshima, and 33 other potential targets with over 5 million leaflets warning civilians of the impending attack.

Project Pluto
The government worked on what was to be a giant nuclear powered cruise missile which would loiter over the oceans for years, waiting for WWIII. When the call for Armageddon came they would race down to fighting altitude, go supersonic and start automatically dropping thermonuclear bombs on their target list, and once out of bombs crash into another target and leak built-up fallout from its payload over the crash site. A billion dollars was spent developing this, nuclear engines were made, and worked

Rosemary Kennedy
Kennedy decided that his daughter should have the lobotomy performed; however, he did not inform his wife Rose of this until after the procedure was completed. Surgeons recounted the procedure: “We went through the top of the head, I think she was awake. She had a mild tranquilizer. I made a surgical incision in the brain through the skull. It was near the front. It was on both sides. We just made a small incision, no more than an inch.” The instrument Dr. Watts used looked like a butter knife. He swung it up and down to cut brain tissue. “We put an instrument inside”, he said. As Dr. Watts cut, Dr. Freeman put questions to Rosemary. For example, he asked her to recite the Lord’s Prayer or sing “God Bless America” or count backwards….. “We made an estimate on how far to cut based on how she responded.” ….. When she began to become incoherent, they stopped. (…) After the lobotomy, it quickly became apparent that the procedure was not successful. Kennedy’s mental capacity diminished to that of a two-year-old child. She could not walk or speak intelligibly and was considered incontinent.

U.S. Missile Codes
For 20 years the secret password capable of launching the U.S. Nuclear Missiles was “00000000.” The code that could potentially destroy life as we know it was left on it’s preset code of eight zeros.

Native American Sterilization
The Department of Health and Human Services practiced female sterilization on Native American women all the way through the 1970’s. Often, women would go in for birth and be told that they would die without a “certain procedure,” but never really made clear what that procedure was. The result is people were sterilized by giving consent without full disclosure, and often weren’t informed that they were sterilized at all. Many found out years later when they couldn’t get pregnant. In other words, we were using tax dollars to suppress indigenous birth rates less than 50 years ago.

U.S. Strange Bombs
The US government did initial research into a gay bomb in the 1990s. It was a bomb that compelled people to have compulsive homosexual sex. Two theoretical non-lethal chemical weapons were proposed by a United States Air Force research laboratory; the theories involve discharging female sex pheromones over enemy forces in order to make them sexually attracted to each other. A ‘heavy sweating bomb’, ‘flatulence bomb’ and ‘halitosis bomb’ were also considered by a committee at the time. The plan was to make an enemy so smelly they could be quite literally sniffed out of hiding by their opponents. It was also considered damaging to the enemy’s morale.

The Man Who Prevented WW III
On 27/10/62 a Russian sub was found by an American battle group. The Americans dropped signaling depth charges to force the sub to the surface for identification. As the sub had been hiding in deep water it had no way of knowing if the USSR and the US were at war. The captain of the sub wanted to fire a nuclear torpedo, but Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov, who was serving as first officer on the sub as well as flotilla commander, refused. This action basically prevented a nuclear shooting war and probably WWIII. Funnily enough Arkhipov also served on the infamous K-19 and it was that reputation which managed to convince the sub captain to not launch the nuclear torpedoes.

War Plan Red
War Plan Red. It was a plan created by the US in the early 20th century preparing for if they went to war with the United Kingdom. Basically the idea was to invade Canada and hope the UK surrenders.

Japanese Human Experimentation
The Japanese famously conducted human experimentation research on the Chinese and Koreans, in a location called Unit 731. They performed vivisections, forced people to infect each other and children with STDs namely syphilis, freeze peoples limbs solid and record the damage and results, and perform a battery of other brutal tests. Experiments attempting to weaponize the Bubonic Plague also took place. The most disturbing part is that when it was shut down, rather than be charged with war crimes, the US pardoned the researchers in exchange for all their information. These war criminals walked free and the US got a nice payday of bio and chemical weaponry data, some of which is still undisclosed.

Nixon’s Deadly Cambodia Bombing
It is a lesser known memory that Nixon ordered massive bombings of Cambodia by B52 bombers, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 150,000 people. This also helped lead to the rise of Khmer Rouge who killed 3 million people.

The U.S. Nearly Nuked Itself
On January 3, 1961, a United States B-52 bomber went into a tail spin and broke up mid air, accidentally dropping two Mark-39 hydrogen bombs over Goldsboro North Carolina. One of the bombs worked exactly as intended. It’s parachute deployed and triggers activated, armed and ready to donate on impact. Shortly before impact, 3 of the 4 low voltage safety switches failed, preventing two 4 megaton nuclear explosions.

JFK Brain
John F. Kennedy’s brain was lost before it could be autopsied. I don’t mean that it was left at the scene; they cut it out of his head, set it aside, and said, “whoops.”

A Corporate Takeover of the United States Government was going to be Real
In 1933, group of wealthy businessmen that allegedly included the heads of Chase Bank, GM, Goodyear, Standard Oil, the DuPont family and Senator Prescott Bush tried to recruit Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler to lead a military coup against President FDR and install a fascist dictatorship in the United States.

Between 1930 and 1960, manufacturers did all they could to prevent the link between asbestos and respiratory diseases, including cancer, becoming known, so they could avoid prosecution.

CIA’s “Family Jewels”
“The CIA’s family jewels. It’s a collection of terrible acts the CIA did during the Cold War. Highlights include sexually assaulting prisoners to make them more likely to fail a lie detector test and the various wire taps and standing orders to read all mail to and from Russia. The linked document has a table of contents”

Project Iceworm
Project Iceworm was the code name for a top-secret United States Army program during the Cold War to build a network of mobile nuclear missile launch sites under the Greenland ice sheet. The ultimate objective of placing medium-range missiles under the ice — close enough to strike targets within the Soviet Union — was kept secret from the Danish government. To study the feasibility of working under the ice, a highly publicized “cover” project, known as Camp Century, was launched in 1960. However, unsteady ice conditions within the ice sheet caused the project to be canceled in 1966.

Japanese Chemical Attack
During WWII Japan was planning on launching chemical attacks on the U.S. Despite, whether it had been successful or not, Japan decided to can the idea for being too inhumane.

Largest Sea Evacuation in History
On the morning of 9/11 when the towers came down, millions of people were trapped on Manhattan Island. Bridges, subways, roads, and tunnels were closed. Hundreds of thousands of people ran south to the water’s edge, only to realize that Manhattan is, indeed, an island. The only way off was by boat.Whatever boats were present immediately began taking on as many people as they could hold. Not how many they were legally allowed; they took as many people as they could possible hold.It quickly became apparent that more help was needed. The Coast Guard put out the call for “all available boats” to descend on lower Manhattan to help with the evacuation. Within minutes, hundreds of boats of all sizes, shapes, and functions were on the way.On that horrible day, some incredible things happened.Among them was the courage and impulse to help that ordinary folks discovered within themselves. This became the largest sea evacuation in history. Ordinary people — hundreds of unsung heroes — rescued 500,000 civilians in less than nine hours.
