It’s Amazing to think that in 2016 a large group of people believe that the Earth is still flat. The Earth is known to be a sphere an was proven through scientific methods in antiquity, the hellenistic period, the middle ages and eventually in modern times (which proved it through photographic evidence from space). What’s strange is these “Flat Earth Societies have been around for years and in several different countries. These societies have also gained notoriety through celebrity endorsement, including: rap artist, B.O.B.; social media personality, Tila Tequila; and playwright, George Bernard Shaw.

The flat Earth model is an archaic conception of the Earth’s shape as a plane or disk.Modern flat Earth societies are modern societies that are based on the belief that the Earth is flat. Modern flat Earth hypotheses originated with the English writer Samuel Rowbotham. Based on conclusions derived from the Bedford Level experiment, Rowbotham published a pamphlet Zetetic Astronomy, which he later expanded into a book Earth Not a Globe, proposing the Earth is a flat disc centered at the North Pole and bounded along its southern edge by a wall of ice, Antarctica, with the Sun and moon 3,000 miles (4,800 km) and the “cosmos” 3,100 miles (5,000 km) above Earth. He also published a leaflet entitled “The inconsistency of Modern Astronomy and its Opposition to the Scriptures!!”, which argued that the “Bible, alongside our senses, supported the idea that the earth was flat and immovable and this essential truth should not be set aside for a system based solely on human conjecture”.

Rowbotham and followers like William Carpenter gained attention by successful use of pseudoscience in public debates with leading scientists. One such debate, involving Alfred Russel Wallace, concerned the Bedford Level experiment. Rowbotham created a Zetetic Society in England and New York, shipping over a thousand copies of Zetetic Astronomy.

After Rowbotham’s death, Lady Elizabeth Blount, wife of explorer Sir Walter de Sodington Blount, established a Universal Zetetic Society, whose objective was “the propagation of knowledge related to Natural Cosmogony in confirmation of the Holy Scriptures, based on practical scientific investigation”. The society published a magazine, The Earth Not a Globe Review, and remained active well into the early 20th century. A flat Earth journal, Earth: a Monthly Magazine of Sense and Science, was published between 1901–1904, edited by Lady Blount.

The International Flat Earth Research Society (IFERS), the first Flat Earth society organization, was founded by Englishman Samuel Shenton in 1956 and was later led by American Charles K. Johnson, who based the organization in his home town of Lancaster, California. The belief lacked representation after Johnson’s death in 2001, until the name was reclaimed in 2004 by Johnson’s self-proclaimed successor “Daniel Shenton”, a man claiming to live in Hong Kong.

In 2004, Daniel Shenton (not related to Samuel) resurrected the Flat Earth Society, basing it around a web-based discussion forum. This eventually led to the official relaunch of the society in October 2009, and the creation of a new website, featuring the world’s largest public collection of Flat Earth literature and a user-edited encyclopedia. Moreover, the society began accepting new members for the first time since 2001, with musician Thomas Dolby becoming the first member to join the newly reconvened society. As of July 2014, over 500 people have become members. Shenton has also conducted several interviews since the society’s relaunch, including in The Guardian newspaper.

In 2013, part of this society broke away to form a new web-based group also featuring a forum and wiki.

While in the past people believed that the Earth is flat and that the Sun revolves around it, science taught us the Earth is actually a sphere revolving around the Sun. But what if the old teachings were right and the official science got it all wrong? Check out these 14 clues that may indicate that the Earth is flat!

1. The Horizon Always Appears Flat
On photos made by amateur drones, the horizon always appears as a perfectly straight line, while footage made by NASA and other space agencies always shows some curvature.

2. The Supposed Curvature Factor Is Not Presented in Engineering Plans
Railways or canals over hundreds of miles long are always cut and laid flat, without any curvature factor calculated. Even odder is that engineers and architects, as people of science, do not seem to mind this at all.

3. Curvature Factor Is Not Presented in Airplane Flying Tracks
If the Earth wasn’t flat, airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly straight without a constant altitude correction.

4. The Spinning of the Earth Should Allow Us to Travel More Easily
Earth’s spin at approximately 1000mph should allow flying objects to hover over the surface while desired destinations are coming to them, not to waste energy traveling around the globe instead.

5. No One Has Measured Earth’s Spin Yet
Earth is supposedly spinning eastwards at a speed of over a 1000mph, but no one has actually measured this, nor does anyone actually feels this movement.

6. Inconstancy in Charts
When Captain James Clark Ross traveled around the Antarctic, he experienced constant inconstancy in his charts, finding himself 12-16 miles outside their reckoning on a daily basis.

7. The Inconsistent Antarctica Model
The ice continent is supposedly no bigger than 12,000 miles in circumference, yet British ship Challenger made a complete circumnavigation of Antarctica traversing 69,000 miles.

8. Impossible Water Physics
The well-known water physics of level maintenance would be impossible if Earth was a giant sphere – it would splatter all around instead.

9. Rivers Would Be Flowing Uphill
Rivers have to reach sea-level. If Earth was a sphere, then some of them, like MIssisipy, would have to ascend for miles before reaching their destination.

10. Traveling Eastward Would Be Much Harder
The effect of the Earth spinning should negate any attempt of a commercial airline to fly Eastward at any speed below 1000mph.

11. The Inconsistency of the Atmosphere
Atmospheric phenomena would be practically unpredictable if the Earth was round.

12. Airplane Landings Would Be Impossible
The spinning of the Earth would make it practically impossible for planes to land on the ground below them. Since the ground would constantly be moving at a tremendous speed, no airplane would manage to hit the landing site.

13. The Port Nicholson Light in New Zealand
In New Zealand, there is a famous lighthouse called The Port Nicholson Light. Even if it stands way above sea-level, it shouldn’t be visible more than a couple of miles away because of the supposed Earth curvature, but it visibility springs on more than 35 miles.

14. The Flight Around the Earth to Reverse Time Propaganda
At the end of the 1978 “Superman” movie, Superman accelerates around the Earth opposite of its spinning direction, rewinding time, in order to save Lois. If Earth was indeed a rotating sphere, this would be possible, but since time travel doesn’t exist, it only proves that Earth is as flat as a pancake.
