Food-binding was one of the more bizarre cosmetics traditions, as one of China’s oldest practicing foot-binder explains.

Zhoe Guizen who is 89 years old, recalls how after the practice was banned, she tricked government inspectors by wrapping her small feet with thick bandages and wearing big shoes to make her feet look bigger and more natural.

As you see, the foot looks mangled and deformed, and it’s shocking to hear it was self-inflicting.
